The Journey to which Jesus calls us is a journey of discipleship. A disciple is a person who strives to be what their teacher is. They seek to achieve this by spending time with them, learning from them, and doing what they do. This is why, when Jesus called his first disciples, he called them ‘to be with him’ (Mark 3:14), to travel the roads with him, learn by his side, and live as he lived. Too often, Christians have fallen into ‘cheap grace,’ treating the salvation Jesus offers like a chip you can put in your pocket and pull out when you die to get you into heaven. But while the salvation Jesus offers is eternal, there is more to it than that. Jesus desires to create a community of disciples who, through their life and witness, impact the world here and now by showing the world his way, inviting others to the journey, and, through the following of his way and the proclamation of his Lordship, renew the world by bringing hope wherever there is hopelessness, love wherever there is hatred, justice wherever there is injustice, and peace wherever there is violence. This is the call to anyone who would be a follower of Jesus.

Toward that end, we take discipleship seriously. Discipleship groups are central to our ministry, and even our Sunday worship services are built around a discipleship model. The beautiful thing about discipleship is that you don’t need to have your act together to begin the journey. Jesus didn’t demand the original twelve disciples get it right away. Rather, he led them gently and patiently, giving them space to grow. Discipleship is a lifelong journey, and none of us will get it entirely right this side of eternity. Jesus understands this, and so do we.
